Introduction

The joint research unit (UMR) "Dynamics and sustainability of ecosystems: from the source to the ocean" (DECOD) was created on January 1, 2022 by bringing together research teams from INRAE, Ifremer and the Agro Institute of Rennes.

This entity brings together researchers, engineers and technicians from laboratories located in Brest, Lorient, Nantes and Rennes.

Its ambition is to contribute to producing knowledge to anticipate changes linked to the various pressures exerted by human activities on continental and marine aquatic biodiversity.

A research unit for the study of the functioning of ecosystems and their resources from watersheds to the ocean

DECOD's activities are centered on the analysis of the ecological and evolutionary processes at work in aquatic environments and at their interfaces, from the source to the ocean, the assessment of the state of biodiversity, and the construction possible future scenarios for these ecosystems. It is essential to take an interest in the land-sea continuum and its interfaces (aquatic/terrestrial, fresh water/salt water, coast/high seas, etc.) to complete the knowledge acquired on these ecosystems considered in isolation and to understand and, if possible, stop the decline in biodiversity in aquatic environments.

The results of this research are used to develop tools and methods for assessing the state of ecosystems and exploited resources, and therefore for decision support for management. The UMR thus brings together a scientific community that conducts research to support public, national and European policies.

Aware of its social responsability, DECOD has reflected on the vision, mission and values that guide its activity.

3 supervisory establishments

The French Research Institute for the Exploitation of the Sea, which brings together 1,500 people working on some twenty sites located in the three great oceans, the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific, is recognized throughout the world as one of the first institutes in marine science and technology.
It conducts research, innovates, produces expertise to protect and restore the ocean, exploit its resources responsibly, and share marine knowledge and data to create new opportunities for economic growth that respects the marine environment.

The French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (INRAE) brings together a community of 12,000 people located in 18 centers throughout France.

Faced with population growth, climate change, resource scarcity and declining biodiversity, the Institute is building solutions for multi-performing agriculture, quality food and sustainable management of resources and ecosystems.

The Agro Institute brings together 4,500 students and 1,300 staff on 6 campuses and 4 experimental agricultural farms. It covers all plant and animal sectors and themes. It offers a wide range of initial (engineering, master's, doctorate, professional license) and continuing education programs.
