My work within the ESCAPE project investigates how fish escape from trawls, examining  behaviors such as, swimming speed, escape angles, the frequency of escape attempts. To do this, I will use an Individual-Based Model of fish coupled with a physical model of a trawl.

The model will be parameterised with behavioural data extracted through AI-based analysis of underwater videos of fish interacting with trawl gear.

Our goal is twofold: first, to validate the model by reproducing known selectivity curves of a trawl; and second, to use it predictively, forecasting how selectivity changes across other trawl configurations varying in key parameters such as mesh size and geometry. Ultimately, this approach should make trawl selectivity predictions easier and less costly, reducing the need for extensive at-sea trials.
