Management measures may include a ban on bottom trawling in certain Natura 2000 areas, pending technological innovations that significantly reduce the impact of trawls on benthic habitats (Biton, 2023).
In response to this, the CONNECT project was launched in 2020 as a partnership between CRPMEM Bretagne, Coopération Maritime, Ifremer, and the companies OCTECH and SEAGNAL. This project developed software that provides indicators, enabling the crew to optimize settings (warp release, speed, etc.) in order to reduce energy consumption on the one hand, and limit physical interactions with habitats on the other.
A trial was conducted aboard a trawler equipped with SUBWIN sensors and the software in Brittany to assess the relationship between the door’s settings, their effectiveness, and their interactions with the seafloor.
