The sole is an emblematic species of the Bay of Biscay. Although a considerable number of vessels rely on this species, we have observed a decline in recruitment that has accelerated over the past decade, despite the implementation of management measures that have resulted in a reduction in fishing mortality.

The objective of this project is to ascertain at which stage of the life cycle a decline in sole survival can be identified, which would ultimately result in a reduction in recruitment. The data obtained from the fishing and environmental surveys will be analysed statistically in order to identify a break in abundance between the different life stages. This preliminary stage will enable us to better target the stage of the life cycle requiring in-depth research, which will be the subject of a larger-scale project to identify the factors influencing sole survival on the stages identified in this project.
