Of the nearly 7,000 fishing vessels operating in mainland France and the overseas territories, 22% engage in bottom trawling and use bottom trawl doors (30% in the Atlantic, the English Channel, and the North Sea). It is widely acknowledged that these doors have an impact on the seafloor and marine habitats, particularly through sediment resuspension, abrasion, and displacement. The objective of this project is to develop doors optimized for energy efficiency and performance within a “off bottom door” rig configuration, which has virtually no impact on marine habitats. A hydrodynamic optimization study to design a new geometry for the lifting profiles, followed by tank and then at-sea tests, led to the development of a door with a specific rigging system that can be transferred to the industry. Efforts to begin disseminating this technique to the industry were undertaken at the end of the project.  IFREMER, Morgère, ENSTA Brest, and CNPMEM participated in this project.
