Eco-evolutionary dynamics in response to anthropogenic perturbations |

Research
Context and Issues
Recent advances in evolution have demonstrated that the evolution of phenotypic traits can operate on the same time scales as ecological dynamics. At the same time, we now know that phenotypic traits play a major role in controlling ecological interactions, and that these trait-dependent effects can often outweigh density-dependent effects. These recent discoveries in evolution and ecology pave the way for the merging of the two disciplines: evolutionary dynamics operate on ecological timescales and affect traits that, in turn, determine natural selection, giving rise to eco-evolutionary feedback loops. Objectives
NOUVEAU aims to improve our empirical understanding of eco-evolutionary feedback loops, focusing on the response to anthropogenic disturbances in complex food webs.Methodology
The project is based on the experimental simulation of fishing and a biological invasion, in parallel in outdoor mesocosms and in the laboratory.Expected Results
The knowledge produced by the project will allow a better understanding of the mechanisms that control the dynamics of biodiversity, particularly in the context of anthropogenic disturbances. Ultimately, this work will be used to project the effects of global changes and to better manage their effects.Partners
